I really need to sit down in the middle of the night, alone in my bedroom and listen to some Incubus in order to write down everything I’ve experienced this past month in Sierra Leone. I can say that it has been an amazing and humbling experience and has changed the way I look at A LOT of things.

I will never intentionally try to be that person who says things like “well you know there are children in Africa who are starving..” to make other people feel bad for complaining about little stuff.. but I know that for me personally, I’ve gained a better sense of myself, what and who I have in my life and I realize how incredibly blessed I am to be where I’m at right now. Whether I’m blessed by God, the Universe, Nature, Buddha, Allah, the Force, Ainur, the Seven, Grandmother Willow, or whoever, I am happy.

I’ve learned through the way our organization works and through my boss that the world is always in perfect order. Whatever is happening to you right now is exactly what is supposed to be happening. No coincidence, no fate, just the Earth, rotating on its axis around the Sun, like it does every day. So much shit has happened these last 3 weeks that tried to interfere with our mission here, but here I am, 2 days to departure, and EVERYTHING has happened according to plan. We dealt with cars breaking down, flat tires, forgotten and lost visas, malaria outbreaks, natural disasters, and so much more… But what we came here to do.. has been done. The focus we had for this trip was never broken and that’s a really amazing thing to experience. We worked hard and had a shit load of fun along the way.

There was one moment, (this is really corny..) when we were driving cross-country. I was asleep for the first half of it and right when I woke up, we entered this huge, open road. Jurassic Park/ King Kong/ Where the Wild Things Are looking scenery all around me, my friend hands me a cold mango juice and a joint that our driver rolled for us (weird, I know).. Someone’s iPhone is on shuffle and Muse’s “Madness” comes on (I’d only been listening to African music and Michael Jackson all week long).. and at that moment, I thought “Wow… This is exactly where I’m meant to be right now.”

Then, 10 minutes later, our car broke down lol. But for 4 minutes and 40 seconds, my mind was nowhere else but at that exact moment. Really now, how often does that happen? I’m always thinking about my future, my past, what I’m having for lunch later, that funny thing that happened yesterday, what I’ll be doing for my 30th birthday 6 years from now… Not very often am I completely aware of what is happening right before my eyes… But I was for 4 minutes and 40 seconds… Even when our car broke down, we knew it was meant to be. My friend Ana had been talking about how badly she wanted to listen to Reggae music.. Well, well, well, guess what’s playing on the radio at the “auto shop” we stopped at? Reggae music.

Anyway, I’m getting tired of talking about myself and my existentialist experiences. The picture up there is one of my favorites. I took that picture the first day we visited Muddy Lotus Primary School, SOSL’s flagship school and program.

Muddy Lotus was founded by Tiffany, my boss, 7 years ago when she was working on a documentary in this village called Bongema. She would walk by this broken down building every day and inside she saw children and teachers and realized this was a school building. Knowing that she saved an extra $10,000 for her documentary trip, she instead used that money to remodel the school. She added a roof, desks, chairs, chalkboards..She went into the community and hired a teaching staff, a school mother, and decided that she was going to create an organization (SOSL) to fund this school so that every student there gets a free education. The village demanded that she name the school or they would name it “Tiffany’s School.” She knew she didn’t want anything named after her so she thought hard about a school name. Driving back to her hotel, her and her friend drove by these abandoned diamond mines and found these beautiful lotus flowers growing in the ground water. Her friend told her that, in fact, the filthier the water is, the more beautiful the lotus flower grows… Thus, “Muddy Lotus” was born.. In the conditions they are in, these students grow more and more beautiful every day. They are true gems.

Ever since I’ve been working for SOSL I’ve known this story… I never fully grasped the meaning of it until now. I knew it was a nice story, but now I’m a part of it. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. That’s why I love this picture so much. These kids are so motivated and determined to go to school. Education is a true passion, which you don’t see happening very much in the US. For 2 years I’ve sat behind my computer writing emails, looking at budgets, talking to people in SL that I have never even met. Now I’m part of this journey, this partnership, this family.

To think at one point, I wanted to quit because I wasn’t getting paid enough. I thank every person that told me to stick it out. This trip has been more rewarding than any paycheck could read. An experience of a lifetime. I’ll be coming back, no doubt about that.

I think you’re officially an adult know. Paradigm shift much?

Okay I’ll admit, I was one of the skeptics who dismissed this upcoming album’s impending impact on the Electronic Dance Music scene as nothing more than hype, because let’s face it, a lot of people were hailing it as “game changing” before “Get Lucky” even hit the airwaves. Today, shortly after the album appeared to have been leaked online, it became available for streaming on iTunes in its entirety. You can listen here: http://www.itunes.com/daftpunk.

Boy, was I in for a treat. Within fifteen seconds of listening, I knew I was wrong. Within fifteen minutes of listening, I became absolutely convinced that this is the groundbreaking album that the dance music world so sorely needed. Following not necessarily the traditional conventions of four-to-the-floor and saw synth leads so often found in dance music today, but rather adapting musical nuances of rock, jazz, and classical, then served with a graceful dash of Daft Punk’s signature “disco-funk” sound, Random Access Memories defies genres and gently but unabashedly delivers what could be best described as “musical bliss.” Yes, it’s that good.

Wolfgang Gartner recently addressed this in his interview with White Raver Rafting, where he said, albeit slightly hypocritically, “In some way I’m hoping Daft Punk single-handedly destroys this phenomenon we’re experiencing and un-brainwashes everybody into realizing that real music should have some soul and authenticity to it, and not just be a big kick drum and a trance breakdown with a cheesy one-liner and a ‘big drop.’” His wish may have came true—you’re not going to find any heavy buildups (except in the last minute and half of the last track) nor will you find any massive drops of multi-layered hypersaw synths here (as much as I love those).

Instead, what you’ll find are beautifully composed tracks like “The Game of Love,” with vocoded vocals ever so slightly reminiscent of Daft Punk’s Discovery album, mixed smoothly into songs with melodic arpeggiated synth riffs accompanied by a soothing jazzy electric piano like on “Giorgio by Moroder,” to rock-influenced jams like “Instant Crush” featuring vocals from Julian Casablancas of The Strokes (complete with a guitar solo!), and of course the future classic “Get Lucky” featuring Pharrell Williams. Each track on this album deserves every second of your listening attention, but as I’m a sucker for vivid lyrics and bright feel-good chord progressions, perhaps my personal favorite thus far is “Fragments of Time” featuring Todd Edwards:

Driving this road down to paradise
Letting the sunlight into my eyes
Our only plan is to improvise

And it’s crystal clear
That I don’t ever want it to end

If I had my way I would never leave
Keep building these random memories
Turning our days into melodies
But since I can’t stay

I’ll just keep playing back
These fragments of time
Everywhere I go
These moments will shine

In their Rolling Stone interview last month, Thomas Bangalter himself said, “Electronic music right now is in its comfort zone and it’s not moving one inch.” Even if this album doesn’t violently wake Electronic Dance Music up from its hypnosis of bland conformity, I’m sure it will be moved at least more than an inch.
